World AIDS Day - be aware

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Its World AIDS Day - get informed. HIV/AIDS is preventable, but NOT curable.

At this point in 2009, over 30 million people have died from AIDS, not to mention the other illnesses associated with HIV.

How many people have died from H1N1? I have no idea what the exact numbers are, but I'm fairly certain its under 10,000, and that number seems way too high.

So why has there been a huge hype/scare about H1N1, an illness that has killed a fraction of the worlds population? Why does everyone forget about the worlds endemic, HIV/AIDS? Because there is money in treating/preventing H1N1. There is no money in HIV/AIDS.

My annoyance of H1N1 - Swine Flu

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

I've got a cold, and I've had too many people state "hopefully its not swine flu." Personally this is a comment that I could do without...not because I'm afraid of this "epidemic" like the North American masses, but because I don't BELIEVE in this swine flu problem.

Now, I'm not doubting that there is a flu called Swine Flu (H1N1), and I'm not doubting its health effects. But I AM doubting its severity and the need for such a global freakout (for lack of a better word) regarding this apparent epidemic.

What's the death toll at now? Around 500? Possibly less.
And how many people have died from AIDS? Right, over 25 MILLION. So I wonder, why are people so concerned about catching/preventing/treating H1N1, when thousands of people contract a provenly DEADLY virus, HIV, every day - a disease which is not curable, contrary to swine flu. This doesn't add up, and it certainly doesn't make sense.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to one factor: governments (USA) and pharmaceuticals (USA) can't make money off of treating HIV/AIDS patients. But they CAN make money from swine flu medication/vaccinations.

This is so sick...pardon the pun.

Wednesday, September 23, 2009 marked a big day for Project World Citizen. After presenting our project proposal to the Rotary Club in our community, we received $4500CDN to fund the first phase of our computer lab project in Banko, Ghana. We will present to a few other Rotary clubs in the area asking them to match this wonderful donation.

The Ghana Project created by Project World Citizen will officially start in May 2010, with myself as CEO flying to Ghana to kick start the project. We can't wait!!!!!

HIV/AIDS awareness campaign - please discuss/advise!!!

Related to country: Ghana
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

In helping to achieve the MDG's, specifically MDG 6, the Non-Profit which I created, Project World Citizen, would like to implement an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign.

Our first project (a computer lab) as Project World Citizen begins in the town of Banko, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. This is a rural village where the nearly 100% of economic output is generated through farming. Students are given few opportunities to further their education, thus HIV/AIDS knowledge is low, and stigmatism is high.

Since we are already connected to the town of Banko, Project World Citizen would like to be able to advise youth and community members about HIV/AIDS. Many youth in this area will be pressured to leave the community to find jobs in bigger cities, or they will be enticed by the prospects of more money being earned away from their community. Risky sex can become very typical in these 'youth moves to the city' situations and we would like to educate these students about practicing safe sex, what HIV/AIDS is, how it is contracted, etc.

Right now we are seeking the advice of our TIG members to help us identify the areas which you feel are most important in an awareness campaign such as this one. Please leave your comments on which issues/areas need to be addressed, effective ways of presenting this information, what would/would not work in Africa, Ghana, and rural communities, and anything else you think would be useful as we plan for this presentation.

Thanks in advance for your feedback fellow TIG Members!

K'Naan Music

Related to country: Somalia
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Born in Mogadishu, Somalia (the land of poets), K'naan (Kanaan Warsame) lived through some intense conflicts. For anyone who knows about Somalia, you will know what I'm talking about when I say 'conflicts' (for lack of a better word).

Shortly after intense civil war broke out in the 80's, K'naan was able to flee Somalia and come to New York City. From there his family relocated to a new life in Toronto, Canada.

With his second album, Troubadour, he has become one of the biggest emerging hip-hop/world music artists. He writes meaningful lyrics about the social injustices in the world, mainly in Africa and in particular, Somalia. His words tell stories, they educate, they inform. For anyone who does not know K'naan - YOU NEED TO KNOW HIS MUSIC!

I'm writing this as a huge fan, and for no other reason but to let more people know about the emcee and musician, K'naan! You won't be sorry if you give it a listen! Current favourites to listen to: Wavin' Flag; Take a Minute, People Like Me, TIA

More K'naan at: www.twitter.com/iamknaan

** I was at his performance in Whistler on 22nd August and it was one of the most awe inspiring performances I have ever seen **
